Umesh and Usha Gulati Scholarship

Administering Organization: Triangle Community Foundation

Education has always been a core value for Umesh and Usha Gulati.  While growing up in India, Umesh’s mother and father, a physician, stressed on him that going to school and getting a good education were the best means to success, earning a livelihood for the family, and also being productive, self-reliant and valuable members of society. Usha learned that, as a woman in the Indian culture, her opportunities were limited, so she had to take advantage of every opportunity for educational advancement.  After their marriage, the couple came to this country, Umesh in 1964 and Usha in 1965, where both have been involved in the educational system ever since.  Umesh holds a Masters degree from the University of Delhi, India, a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, and was a professor for 32 years at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.  Usha has earned two Masters Degrees, one in Education from the University of Virginia, and the other in Library Science from East Carolina University.  Since 2002, they have made their home in Durham, where their daughter Gita and her husband Edd, were already residing.  Usha and Umesh support many charitable causes in the area.
