Purpose

This scholarship was created in memory of Susan Ellis Roberts who passed away in 2003.  Susan was a highly regarded educator who brought creativity, talent and love to her work. Susan believed that students who do not fit a mold are often overlooked.  Like a “diamond in the rough,” these students shine, but not necessarily in a typical or expected way.  The scholarship was developed to identify and award a Wake County public school graduating senior who has demonstrated a creative gift or special talent in visual or performing arts, leadership, teaching, entrepreneurship or other area of talent who is that “diamond in the rough.”

Amount & Use of Funds

$3,000

The scholarship may be used towards any need listed under the school’s total cost of attendance. The student is responsible for all other charges. The student is responsible for all other charges. This is a one-time payment.

Criteria

  • Minimum GPA: None
  • Residency Requirements: Residents of Wake County.
  • High School Restrictions: Attending a public Wake County high school.
  • Plan of Study Restrictions: None
  • This scholarship is restricted to students planning to enroll in school full time.

How To Obtain An Application

One student will be nominated by a committee directed by the Arts Department Chair from each Wake County high school based on the criteria above.  The student will be asked to complete an application and the top three candidates may be asked for an interview.
