Held every August, Black Philanthropy Month is a time set aside to celebrate and recognize the contributions of the Black philanthropic leadership that supports our communities, and applaud the impact and power of Black collective giving to transform lives and make a difference.
Started in August 2011 by Dr. Jackie Copeland-Carson and the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network (PAWPNet) as an annual, global celebration of African-descent giving, Black Philanthropy Month has become a widespread effort to inform, involve, inspire, and invest in Black philanthropic leadership to strengthen African-American and African-descent giving in all its forms.
At Triangle Community Foundation, we are proud to sponsor this month each year. Because a celebration of the power of giving back in all of its forms is important and worthy — every month. Because inspiring and encouraging others to give back to the community is what we do. Because we recognize and honor the diverse strengths, needs, voices, and backgrounds of all people in our region. Because we lift up the stories of the visionary and forward-thinking donors in our region.
But we recognize that we are not perfect. We are striving for equity, and investing in learning about our community’s needs and structural barriers, while working towards building strong, resilient leaders who reflect that very community. While we continue this journey towards an equitable community, a vibrant Triangle that works together to ensure everyone belongs and thrives, we are proud to lift this month up in celebration of the amazing impact of the Black givers, leaders, and do-ers in our community.
