Funding Community Needs
With grants exceeding $3 million during the first quarter of calendar year 2007, Triangle Community Foundation was able to have a significant impact not only in the Triangle, but throughout the state and beyond. Education-related causes topped the list of organizations receiving first quarter funding, and the majority of the grants were made to entities headquartered in Wake County.

Noteworthy grants include:
Carol Woods Retirement Community – Located in close proximity to both UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke, Carol Woods provides its residents with an active lifestyle of learning, growing and contributing to both Carol Woods and the community at large. The focus on well-being and preventative healthcare enables residents to pursue things that matter to them throughout retirement, whether volunteering at the facility’s on-site children’s center, joining a bird walk on one of its many wooded trails or attending the symphony or theater. A gift from the Caroline M. Punte Fund of Triangle Community Foundation will help ensure residents have continued access to a wide variety of stimulating programs and activities throughout their golden years.

Center for Death Penalty Litigation (CDPL) – CDPL provides legal representation to indigent defendants accused and/or convicted of capital crimes in North Carolina. The Center’s attorneys work primarily on post-conviction cases, though some handle cases in the trial phase as well. CDPL also assists attorneys throughout the state by providing trial and post-conviction consulting services, training programs and the most current research and information about capital litigation and the death penalty in general. Support for this vital work comes from a variety of donors, including the Backyard Fund of Triangle Community Foundation.

Community Health Coalition – Monetary support from donors like the Quintiles Gives Back Fund of Triangle Community Foundation together with volunteers from the Durham Academy of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy enable the Community Health Coalition to bring together resources to provide health education, promotion and disease prevention activities to and in Durham’s African-American community.

Garner Road Family YMCA – With the support of many donors, including its own endowment fund at Triangle Community Foundation, Garner Road Family YMCA serves youth, adults and seniors in the Garner area. Its programs help build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all by promoting good health, strong families, confident children and better communities.
